Margaret of
Castello was born hunchback, dwarf, blind and lame in
1287 to a wealthy Florence family, who shut her up in a cell
most of her childhood. When she was not cured, they abandoned
her at a shrine while still young. Embraced by the street
beggars, she eventually entered the Church and became an
inspiration to those around her, visiting prisoners and
helping the sick and dying. After she died at 33,
she was made patron saint for the unwanted and
abandoned. Her story is rich with irony, humor, passion
and profound acceptance of humanity, no matter their physical
condition or status
