A product
of Yale
University's
School
of
Drama, he had built a distinguished career in stage and film.spanning over 50
years. Starting with "The
"Silver Chalice" in 1954, he had starred in many
landmark films which include the film adaptation of "Cat on a
Hot Tin Roof" in 1958. The
1960's would bring Paul Newman into superstar status as he became one of
the most popular actors of the decade and garnered three more Best Actor
Oscar nominations for "The Hustler" in 1961,
"Hud" in
1963. and "Cool Hand Luke"
in 1967. 1969 would bring the popular screen duo Paul Newman and Robert
Redford together for the first time with the box office smash "Butch
Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid "
Four years later, they would team up again for
"The Sting."
He also starred
in the comedy about semi-pro hockey that has become a cult classic, "Slap
Shot." He also
starred in lesser known gems such as "The Life and Times of
Judge Roy Bean" in 1972. He became a critics' darling
during in the 1980's with such
films as "The Verdict" in 1982 for which he received his 6th Best Actor
Oscar nomination and in 1987 finally received his first Oscar for "The
Color of Money," in which he reprised his role from "The
Hustler." One landmark role he landed was that of role of
General Leslie Groves, who was the driving force behind the atomic bomb
program during WWII. in "Fat Man and Little Boy."
