Vaclav Havel
1936-2011
Playwright
The dissident playwright who led the "Velvet
Revolution" in Czechoslovakia in the late 1980's and early '90's who
later became the president of the Czech republic.
The most notable of his plays was "Pokušeni" (Temptation) which was a modern take on the Faust legend.
He often referred to the Communist state concept by coining the word
"Absurdistan." A few of his plays pointed out the absurdities of the
totalitarian state.
He was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of
Freedom by George W. Bush.
